My name is _______, BSN, RN, and I am a registered nurse with ten years of clinical experience. I am currently pursuing my graduate education at Purdue University Global to become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) specializing in Family Practice Nursing. I am writing to advocate for improvements in current healthcare policies related to quarantine requirements and testing procedures for healthcare workers exposed to communicable diseases, including COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the critical role healthcare workers play in protecting public health while also highlighting the challenges they face in maintaining their own safety. Nurses and other frontline healthcare professionals experience some of the highest risks of exposure because they provide direct care to patients with infectious diseases. Policies regarding workplace exposure should continue evolving to ensure healthcare workers have appropriate protections while allowing healthcare systems to maintain adequate staffing levels.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), COVID-19 exposure recommendations have changed over time based on vaccination status, testing availability, and emerging scientific evidence. During the pandemic, vaccinated individuals generally had different quarantine recommendations compared with unvaccinated individuals, with masking and monitoring strategies often incorporated into return-to-work decisions (CDC, 2021). While these policies aimed to balance infection control and workforce needs, healthcare workers exposed to COVID-19 continued to experience concerns regarding personal safety, patient protection, and workplace transmission.

As an emergency room nurse with ten years of experience, I have witnessed the significant physical and emotional impact COVID-19 has had on healthcare professionals. Many nurses have experienced increased workloads, staffing shortages, burnout, and emotional exhaustion. Requiring healthcare workers to return to patient care shortly after exposure without sufficient testing opportunities can increase stress and uncertainty, especially when symptoms may not appear immediately after infection.

To strengthen healthcare worker protection, I recommend expanding access to employer-funded PCR testing for healthcare professionals following workplace exposure. PCR testing has demonstrated strong accuracy in detecting SARS-CoV-2 infections and can assist healthcare organizations in identifying infected employees earlier (CDC, 2020). Providing timely testing would allow healthcare facilities to make more informed decisions regarding isolation, return-to-work timelines, and infection prevention practices.

Although implementing expanded testing programs may require additional financial resources, many healthcare facilities already have laboratory capabilities and infrastructure to support PCR testing. The primary expenses would involve additional supplies, staffing resources, and operational support. However, early detection of infections may reduce long-term costs associated with workplace outbreaks, employee illness, staffing shortages, and unnecessary compensation expenses for workers who are not infected.

Healthcare organizations must also recognize the importance of supporting nurses and other frontline professionals who continue to provide essential care during public health emergencies. When healthcare workers feel that workplace policies prioritize their health and safety, they are more likely to maintain trust in leadership and remain committed to delivering high-quality patient care.
