Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Essay Paper
Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) are advanced practice registered nurses who are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and also prescribe medication. Boeijen et al. (2021) mentioned that PMHNPs provide care for patients of all ages and often collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care. In addition, these advanced practice nurses work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, clinics, private practices, and schools. Qualified PMHNPs are an invaluable part of the healthcare system, as they are able to provide specialized care to those suffering from mental health issues Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Essay Paper.

The PMHNP interviewed was motivated to obtain a graduate education from Walden University for a variety of reasons. Primarily, she intended to expand her knowledge in the field and gain additional skills and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. Also, she sought to advance her career opportunities and increase her earning potential. Most importantly, she wanted to provide the best possible care for patients with mental health issues in addition to the desire to obtain the education necessary to become the best psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner she could be.
Walden University’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program includes clinical practicum experiences. Practicum experiences typically totaled 640 hours of supervised practice. The 640 hours of supervised practice are designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (Aggarwal et al., 2022). During their practicum experience, students work with a preceptor who provide guidance and feedback as the student applies their knowledge to real-world clinical situations. Through these experiences, students gain hands-on experience diagnosing, treating, and managing mental health disorders. They also learn how to develop treatment plans and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible care for their patients. The PMHNP also gain experience in evidence-based practice and research, as well as in working with diverse populations.
As a PMHNP, it is important to take on the role for which one is educated for because they play a crucial role in the mental health care system. Johnson, Bennett and Rochani (2022) highlighted that PMHNPs are responsible for diagnosing and treating mental health conditions and prescribing medications.
In view of this, PMHNPs play a vital role in improving access to mental health care and reducing the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues. Needless to say, taking on the role for which they are educated, PMHNPs help to improve the overall mental health of their communities and make a positive impact on the lives of their patients.
The PMHNP admitted that she had to overcome inadequate access to resources when starting in the role which included a limited access to research, technology, and other mental health professionals and services. The remedy she took was to locate and access resources outside of the organization to provide the best care for their patients and advice the administration on the need to revamp the tools and resources necessary for mental healthcare.
A second barrier faced was overcoming the unfamiliarity with the patient population she was serving. This included understanding the unique needs of the patients, gaining their trust and developing a therapeutic relationship.
The third barrier was learning the organizational culture and policies. The nurse submitted that she needed to become familiar with the organizational culture and policies of Hennepin County Medical Center which specifically included understanding the mission and values of the organization, as well as the policies and procedures related to the delivery of mental health services.
There was also the barrier of limited clinical experience in the role. The PMHNP had to overcome a lack of experience in the role when starting. This includes having to learn the role and responsibilities, developing skills related to the role, and learning the systems and processes related to the delivery of mental health services Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Essay Paper
I found four aspects of the PMHNP’s role especially appealing. First, she is able to provide comprehensive care to patients with mental health issues at the facility. This comprehensive care includes individualized treatment plans tailored to the needs of each patient. Second, she was educated at the master’s level and possesses the necessary knowledge and skills to provide evidence-based care. Third, the setting of her current position, Hennepin County Medical Center, is diverse, which enables her to treat a variety of patients. Finally, I was impressed by her dedication to her patients and her desire to provide the best care possible. All these factored makes the PMHNP an excellent practitioner, and I am certain her patients are in the best hands.
As a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, it can be a rewarding and fulfilling profession. However, some aspects of the role may not be as appealing (Aggarwal et al., 2022). One such aspect is the long hours and potential for burnout. While the nurse may be dedicated to providing the best care for their patients, the physical and mental exhaustion of long hours can be a deterrent. As well, the nurse may not have control over the decisions of the healthcare system, resulting in frustration. Finally, dealing with difficult patients or family members can also be challenging. Despite the nurse’s best efforts, it can be not easy to manage these situations, making it an unappealing aspect of the role.
Following graduation as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I aspire to provide comprehensive mental health care to individuals, families, and groups in a variety of settings. I want to use evidence-based practices to diagnose, assess, and treat mental health conditions, and provide education and resources to reduce stigma and promote mental health. Additionally, I want to be a leader in advocating for individuals with mental health needs, empowering them to live healthier and more successful lives.
The information gained from interviewing the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner will be incredibly beneficial to me as I pursue my master’s degree in PMHNP. I will use this information to gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a PMHNP, including their motivations and challenges. This knowledge will help me gain a clearer picture of what I can expect to experience in my role as a PMHNP after graduating from the program. Additionally, the insights gained from the interview will help me set realistic expectations for myself, and will provide me with valuable insight into the type of skills and knowledge that I need to cultivate in order to be successful in the role. Importantly, the information will allow me to tailor my studies in order to best prepare myself for the role
