Word cloud generators have become popular tools for meetings and team-building events. Groups or teams are asked to use these applications to input words they feel best describe their team or their role. A “word cloud” is generated by the application that makes prominent the most-used terms, offering an image of the common thinking among participants of that role.

What types of words would you use to build a nursing word cloud? Empathetic, organized, hard-working, or advocate would all certainly apply. Would you add policy-maker to your list? Do you think it would be a very prominent component of the word cloud? The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy-Making Essay Paper

Nursing has become one of the largest professions in the world, and as such, nurses have the potential to influence policy and politics on a global scale. When nurses influence the politics that improve the delivery of healthcare, they are ultimately advocating for their patients. Hence, policy-making has become an increasingly popular term among nurses as they recognize a moral and professional obligation to be engaged in healthcare legislation. Respond to at least two of your colleaguesâ€* posts by suggesting additional opportunities or recommendations for overcoming the challenges described by your colleagues. Registered nurses and advanced practice registered nurses are given opportunities to actively participate in policymaking. These opportunities are gained through either professional organizations or workplace opportunities.

Professional organizations such as the American nurse association, also known as ANA, allow nurses to voice their concerns and give an opinion on how things are being done and should be done in the workplace. The concerns and opinions of the nurses are important as they know firsthand what does and doesnâ€t work to maintain and provide safe quality care. ANA states that a benefit of being a member is being able to “Make your voice heard with opportunities to tell policymakers what you think” (Join ANA and Your State Nurses Association, n.d.). One challenge one may face when attempting to be a part of policy-making through a professional organization would be becoming a member. For your voice to be heard you must be a member. The application process could be long and there may be a donation or fee that needs to be supplied. Another challenge that nurses face as it pertains to policy-making within a professional organization would be awareness. Nurses are unaware they have the opportunity with the professional organization to assist with policy making. Nurses have historically had little involvement in policymaking that affects healthcare delivery (Welliver, 2016); as a result of awareness.

Workplace opportunities are available too. The RN and APRN may be able to assist the healthcare organization work on new or existing policies. These policies can aid in ensuring that the best quality of care is being rendered.

Challenges that the RN and APRN may face with workplace opportunities are lack of follow through on implementing the new policy or revisions made to an existing one. This challenge leaves the nurse to be reluctant to participate due to a lack of management support (Why Policy Engagement Is the Next Big Nursing Trend – NurseJournal, 2023). If the policy is never introduced and the staff is never trained or in-service appropriately, how can they expect things to move in a progressive way? But how can we move in a progressive manner if supportive leadership is not displayed?

A strategy to overcome these challenges would be to ensure that other employees are introduced to the policy regardless of rather its new or revised. Once the introduction has been made ensure they are trained and display understanding.

I would advocate for better leadership. If better leadership is displayed, then follow through on the implementation of new or revised policies would take place. A good leader would like to see progressive change within the workplace.

I would also advocate for reducing or eliminating fees associated with professional organizations. I would advocate for making donations sufficient. Lastly, I would advocate having someone within the professional organization assist with the application process as it could be complex.

One opportunity for RNs and APRNs to participate in policymaking is for nurses to join a professional nursing organization such as the American Nurses Association (ANA) (American Nurse, 2016). As a member of the ANA, nurses can collaborate with other nurses and organizations to advocate for nurses†rights. They can also advocate for their patients and the care they receive (ANA, n.d.). As nurses, we are always advocating for our patients daily within the hospital; however, being an active member of the ANA, you can advocate statewide and have a more considerable impact. A second opportunity exists for RNs to participate in policymaking is for nurses to further their education and become an APRN. According to Goudreau and Smolenski (2022), APRNs play vital roles in advancing nurse practice, education, policy, and spreading evidence-based knowledge. APRNs are very vocal in speaking out about health prevention/maintenance, chronic disease management, healthcare access, and workforce education and development to engage stakeholders in changing healthcare policy (Goudreau & Smolenski, 2022).

While advocating as RNs and APRNs, a widespread challenge is pushback from political leaders. As medical professionals, we must be able to stand for what is right and provide the evidence that backs the policies we are advocating for. As mentioned before, getting involved in medical professional organizations allows you to have more individuals to support your mission to effect change. Another challenge is the braveness to speak up in general. Sometimes it feels like we are alone in a fight; however, individuals will follow if we speak up and provide evidence-based research. According to Catiker (2022), many nurses and nursing students do not feel they are important enough to make a difference.

A strategy that can be used to advocate for policies is to get your nursing employer involved. Having committees such as nurse councils within your workforce can help bring issues to the forefront, discuss with other medical professionals, research the best practice, and implement new policies to provide the best care possible to your patients. If policies are already set, re-visit them to ensure they are the most current and are best-practice. The world of healthcare is ever-changing; therefore, as RNs and APRNs, we must speak up to make sure what we have set for policy is best for our patients.

A second strategy used to assist in advocating for these policies is being educated in nursing. Understanding health politics and how it relates to your practice allows you to be more involved and find ways to get involved. Implementing policy-making education within curriculums in all nursing education would allow more involvement around nursing policy than there is today. According to Des Jardin (2001), a “lack of knowledge of the political process and public policy formation, feelings of powerlessness and perceived ethical conflict between professional values and political involvement” are all reasons nurses do not get involved.
